Each enjoying its own enclosed garden area, the cottages sit on a pet-oriented smallholding next to a dairy farm in the beautiful and still relatively undiscovered Eden Valley, midway between Penrith, an attractive market town with a happy mix of traditional stores and sophisticated shopping arcades and Carlisle. Set by Hadrian's Wall and renowned for its history of the 'Border Reivers' and impressive medieval castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned, this bustling cathedral city is also home to superb museums and galleries.
Great day trips can be enjoyed in Ullswater and the Lakes, which are just a short drive away, and the nearby village of Armathwaite (1½ miles) provides a village shop and pubs serving food as well as a variety of walks and outdoor activities and a rural station offering gloriously scenic journeys on the famous Settle–Carlisle railway.

Situated on the path of Hadrian’s Wall, at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, Carlisle is just ten miles south of the Scottish border. This vibrant town has served as an important military, industrial, commercial and shopping centre for the region since Roman times. Steeped in the past, it offers a range of both historical and modern attractions for the visitor, including museums, theatres, galleries, parks, sports and swimming facilities. The heart of Carlisle’s historic quarter is home to Cumbria's only cathedral, which was founded in 1122 and has been rebuilt several times. Entry is free and voluntary guides are available. The Prior’s Tower is next to the cathedral and accommodates a small exhibition in the Pele tower.
The imposing medieval fortress of Carlisle Castle has watched over the city for 900 years and is within easy walking distance of the city centre. It now houses the Border Regiment Museum which showcases the history of Cumbria’s County Infantry Regiment, the Border Regiment and the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment and local Militia.
The city boasts a covered market and a pedestrianised shopping centre with a range of shops from the major chain stores to the specialist. Here, every August, the Carlisle Food Fair displays produce from across the continent as well as from the local area, including Cumberland sausage, Cumberland mustard and Cumberland sauce.
Other attractions in the area include: Walby Farm Park, with animals, play barn, maize maze and nature trail; Houghton Hall garden centre with its “World in Miniature”; Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery; and Birdoswald Fort, one of the main forts on Hadrian’s Wall, commanding spectacular views over the Irthing valley to the Lake District Fells.
Other places nearby include Eksdale, Orton and Brampton.
